What is SEO?

Happy Monday! This week we are going to be diving into SEO. What is SEO? How do we use SEO? Why SEO? Those are just a few questions we will be answering over these next 3 days. Today we will be introducing SEO and learning more about what exactly it is, so we can understand how to implement it.

So what is SEO? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

Google says “Search engine optimization is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic to a website or a web page from search engines. SEO targets unpaid traffic rather than direct traffic or paid traffic.” What does that mean? SEO is the process of improving your website in hopes to increase its visibility when people search for your services, products, and anything that may relate to your business on Google and other search engines.

There are 3 main types of SEO; Technical SEO, Off-Page SEO, and On-Page SEO. Using these three things together can help you create a well rounded organic search strategy. I think that one big thing with tons of sections and subsections looks a lot more intimidating than three smaller things with sections under them.

Technical SEO is exactly what you’d think it is; it deals with the technical components of your website such as page speed, site navigation, sitemaps, URL structure, and more. Why is this important? Technical SEO helps make your website fast, easy to navigate, user and mobile friendly, and more.

Off-Page SEO is an umbrella term for indirect SEO-related actions which are aimed to boost the website on the internet that occurs away from that website. Why is it important? It’s important because it tells Google what others think about your site.

On-Page SEO is the practice of optimizing your web page content for search engines which usually include things like internal links, title tags, content, and URLs. What is important? Google is looking through your site for keywords; wouldn’t you want to make those words as appealing as possible?

Now you might be thinking “Well that's a lot of great information, but what’s a sitemap or a title tag? What is the process to achieve these goals? What does this look like for me and my business?” Next week I’ll be posting 3 more posts that dive into each of the sections even more so we can really break down what all of those words and technical terms mean.

Next, we will be diving into how to use SEO and why we should use SEO to begin with.
